No-Pressure-Cooker Mushroom Tek (for Beginners)
If you’re new to mushroom growing and don’t have a pressure cooker, don’t worry. You can still grow successfully using boiling water and basic supplies. Here’s how.
Low-Tech Supplies
- Wide-mouth mason jars or plastic containers
- Brown rice flour or millet
- Vermiculite
- Boiling water bath (large pot)
Basic Steps
- Mix 2 parts vermiculite, 1 part brown rice flour, and 1 part water.
- Load into jars. Cover lids with foil.
- Steam for 90–120 minutes in a covered pot.
- Let cool fully and inoculate with LC or spore syringe.
- Incubate and wait for full colonization before fruiting.
While not as sterile as pressure cooking, this method works well for beginners and hobbyists growing oyster mushrooms or reishi.
