What Is Mycology?
Mycology is the scientific study of fungi. That includes the mushrooms you might spot on a woodland walk, but also molds, yeasts, rusts, and the fungal partners hidden inside lichens. - Mushroom-forming fungi: The familiar caps and stems, which are actually the fruiting bodies of a much larger organism living underground or in wood.
- Molds: Fast-growing fungi that colonize food and damp surfaces, some of them useful, some troublesome.
- Yeasts: Single-celled fungi behind baking and brewing.

How to Start Exploring Mycology
You do not need a laboratory to begin. Curiosity and careful observation go a long way. Here are a few beginner-friendly ways to get started:
- Observe locally: Fungi appear in parks, gardens, and forests, especially in damp autumn weather. Look on logs, in leaf litter, and around tree bases.
- Keep a field notebook: Record where and when you find fungi, along with notes on color, shape, smell, and habitat.
- Use a good guide: A regional field guide helps you learn the features that distinguish one species from another.
- Join a community: Local mycology clubs and citizen science platforms let you learn from experienced foragers and share your findings.
A crucial word of caution: never eat any wild fungus unless it has been identified with certainty by an expert. Some species are edible and delicious, while others are dangerously toxic, and the two can look alarmingly similar. In the early stages, treat mycology as a study to observe and enjoy rather than a source of food.
